The main piece of information that Kyle Walker has to be able to process when deciding on his positioning or on his runs is the positioning of the wide forward ahead of him. The choice is relatively simple: if the wide forward is in the wide area then Walker moves to the half-space. If the wide forward moves into the half-space then Walker occupies the wide area. Of course, the picture is further complicated when you take into account the positioning of the ‘8’ on the right side of the field. Once again the identity of the player who fill this role may dictate the position that Walker will occupy in the attack. Kevin De Bruyne, for example, is more likely to stay in central areas and leave the half-space for Walker to occupy while Bernardo Silva will drift into the half-space. The importance of understanding the tactical picture ahead of him and identifying the spaces that he needs to occupy are key in the role that Walker plays for City.

In figure 49 we see a situation where Walker is able to advance forward on a diagonal line to occupy the half-space on his side of the pitch. Once again the key piece of information for him to process comes in the connecting pass between the ‘8’ and the wide forward. As that pass is made, Walker makes a diagonal run to a high line in the half-space. This run, in turn, allows the wide forward to play the ball through into the path of Walker as he advances forward and threatens the penalty area.
